Configure ASL for e-mail server FAQ?

I am beginning to think that I am too dumb to live! I have been battling with installing an e-mail server on the DMZ interface for a number of days and still do not have any mail flowing. I was wondering if there was a FAQ or some such that explains this process from beginning to end (rather than the bits and pieces that I have been able to find)? Thanks in advance,

    A quote once made by a rather clever fellow:

    There can be a lot of moving parts with an Email relay configuration and firewalls. You should not expect it always to be a walk in the park. Sometimes it is, sometimes it is not. As Xeno is indicating, you need to "read" the resiults of diagnostic tools to figure out what's wrong: logs, traceroutes, telnet port 25 sessions...

    It's work and you have to be stubborn about tracking down the problem...
