QoS parameters on a burstable link

One of my sites has a burstable DS3. The max bandwidth possible is about 45Mbps, then. But my "CIR" if you could call it that on the DS3 is 4Mbits. That is, total in/out traffic over the month cannot exceed 4Mbps per day.

The question: what should be the QoS settings for this link? Should they be the lower 4Mbps? Or should I be using the actually physical max of 45Mbps?

What I really want is to integrate the area under the curve throughout the month and make sure I'm not using up too many bits. So should I make the settings something like 3Mbps download and 1Mbps upload?

    I'm not sure if that'd work well or not, but keep in mind you can only shape OUTGOING traffic with QOS.

    If it did work, you'd probably end up locking outgoing traffic at 4mbps, which is probably not what you want.

    This is a tricky issue. The QoS facilities in ASL cannot ensure that your long term average stays within 4 Mbit/sec.

    I would suggest that you configure the QoS on your outgoing WAN link traffic based on the 45 Mbit/sec maximum burst rate that you have available to you, since you do want to use all of this bandwidth on a momentary, "bursty" basis when it is needed. However, you will have to keep an eye on the stats manually to see where your average traffic is at on a monthly basis.
