qos question

hi folks,

i've got a 1024/512 kbit internet connection. i've enabled qos on the wan interface upload 512 - download 1024.
for outgoing sipcalls i have configured for this service in the packetfilter allow high priority.
so my question is now:
are http and other normal or low priority service reduced the whole time? or just if there's sip-traffic (or high priority traffic) , because it seems that if i do no calls that http slows down as hell.

after disabling qos - http is good again.

    ok it's the whole time - because after disabling qos - surfing was great again. so i thought that qos first acts if there's much traffic so that it makes room for the quality services but not if there's no quality service running at this moment.

    The QOS settings in ASL5 set MAX bandwidth usage for each priority level.

    You can modify those speed tiers though:
    See Here  for how to set them.

    I've got about 256kbps up, so I set mine to 
    256:256:240:230
    I'm not sure it's ideal, but it seems to work OK.

    thanks - but like i said before - i thougt qos acts first if the line is full or better said if the highproirity traffic starts. i didn't know that qos acts the whole time so that http is slow even if there's no sip traffic.
    that's what makes me  [:S]

    In ASL 5, it puts hard limits on the max bandwidth for each class. ASL 3 & 4 were more flexible, but also were much harder to understand.

    Personally I'd prefer priorities over hard limits too.

    agreed..i liked the priorities over hte hard limits..that way if nothing but ftp was going it could borrow the unused bandwidth..but the instant something else came up ftp got slammed down(but still got enough data through to maintain connection and some tranfer) and te other traffic was allowed.  I wonder if Astaro is going to consider putting hte priorities back in along with the hard limits..like give us a choice of one or the other?

    havn't used qos in v4 before, so that i'm not up to date. but my thinking of qos the whole time was that wtihout hard limits. so that u can configure the borrow line function.
    I just can't understand why it's so in v5 now. and what's the goal behind it.
    so i'm looking forward seeing a "real" qos funciton in near future, too.

    sorry but the qos function now sucks, my network isn't really usable with it and i'm not hanging 24h ond voip calls. and if i would than the line could be borrowed for this service, BUT only if there would be a usable qos in v5

    Well, try setting the bandwidths closer together like I posted above and see if your VOIP still works. If so, maybe that'd be good enough?
