getting started, cable connection to WAN

Hello,
Is there a quick how to for setting up as a basic gateway/firewall with NAT/Masqueradiing, dhcp client on the WAN side with no login ,  dhcp server on the LAN side? This is so powerful, and the manual so comprehensive, I'd like to get it in action and then learn some of the finer features.  I have 4.017, and I managed to lock myself out of the management interface setting up masquerading rules and filters. I intend to try a fresh install, and replace my 4 port intel server NIC card with a couple of totally different NICS, so I do not have to try and figure out which port is which NIC ID#

    That was a very helpful link, thank you. I am posting through the new box! Now I can retire my old firewall/router, a 486 with an evergreen tech 120 MHZ processor, 32MB ram, and a 330 MB drive, freebsd 4.4 stripped to the bare essentials [:)]

    Damn. I though I had an oldie with my P-166. It still actually still does a good job running RedHat stripped down with snort_inline.
    You should try to get a copy of v5.010 and install that. What kind of hardware are you running with 4.17 (which should be patched up to 4.22)?
