Your ultimate problem is most likely that hardware.  35+ users on a 400Mhz box with 128MB?  You're fighting a losing battle with hardware that old.  With 35+ users, you need MUCH more horsepower than that for reasonable performance.  I'd recommend a small box running at least 2 Ghz -- you can find them (or build them) for a reasonable cost.

30 usrs is not going to require a 2 ghz machine.  I think a ghz would be more like it(and that is more than likely overkill dpending on configuration) ..his mian issue is ram..get at least 256 in there..i would reccomend 512 is the machine will handle it.

Our company (Office Defender) installs Astaro firewalls commercially and we have extensively tested various hardware configurations in many environments -- some in the laboratory, some in production.  I can't speak for others and don't pretend to, but our tests have shown us, time and time again, that v5.x needs significantly more horsepower than v4.x to function well in a commercial office.  A typical installation includes A/V for web and email, and intrusion protection, at a minimum.  We've attempted to run ASL 5.x on 600Mhz machines, and even with 512MB of RAM the performance is less than satisfactory from our point of view.  Of course, you have to consider that our viewpoint is one of a commercial vendor, not a home user.  We cannot in good conscience sell someone a machine running ASL that is, in our view, marginal.  That being said, hardware is inexpensive these days and, if someone shops around smartly, they can pick up some nice equipment on sale at companies like Dell, often for as little as $300 - $400.  With hardware costs that low for machines at 2+ Ghz, there is (in my opinion) almost no excuse for attempting to run ASL on ancient hardware and hoping for the best.  It may *work*, but you don't know what you're missing in the performance department until you run ASL up on a respectable machine.
