block msn and other messengers

Hi, 
On our school we want to block access to msn, yaho, icq and other chat services. All users go to the internet via the proxy. How can i block msn with rules, we dont have the content filter module.

    if you are using v5, there are a lot of rules for blocking chat services in the intrusion protection

    i´m not using msn, but i think msn uses a special server for authentication. if so find out the server and block connections to it with a packetfilter rule.
    you´re using the proxy. are your pupils forced to use it?
    and what about your packetfilter rules

    The pupils are forced to use the proxy, all another ports are closed. I think msn will be able to go trough the proxy based on the ie settings. I think i have to train squid to drop connections to the msn authentication server but will i able to do this?? 
    Will asataro 5 be a good idea to use and upgrate to it?

    in v5 you can manage it with the intrusion protection.
    but i think that v4 also uses squid so that you can configure the squid .conf and disable sites, etc.
    but take in mind that this could void your support

    p.s.: what services are allowed trough your proxy?

    Most of the Instant Messaging clients use the HTTP Connect method in order to establish connections through the proxy.
    ASL V5 let you block this method. This should break almost all IM clients, so give it  a try.

    Bu I also have to say that there are other clients out there that use the same method, like Streaming clients, that could get brocken by this config option.
