Windows Network Neighborhood [5.004]

i have two XP-Pro home machines connected via a switch to each other and the ASL box.  i'm having trouble configuring a PF rule which allows them to see each other AND drops all the NetBIOS "noise" at the same time.  could someone help me on this?  thanks.

    well both machines need an ip and then they will be able to see each other(the asl box cannot stop that short of denying an ip address to the clientmachines)..the windows boxes have to on the same workgroup and windows domain.  As far as dropping the noise STF for netbios logging..[:)]

    yeah, i have the astaro as DHCP (each machine is successfully getting an IP), and the machines are on the same workgroup. ... i just wondered if the machines had to go through Astaro to see each other (and if so, if Astaro had default settings to block file-sharing ports), because since I started up 5.004 i have not been able to see anything in the Network neighborhood.  ... what does "STF" mean? "Set The Firewall"? "See The File"? and how would i log it, or check the log of it?  My ultimate goal is for these machines to share files.  Thank you for your help.

    If the boxes are on the same switch (assuming no vlans) then astaro can NOT block ANY traffic between the two boxes or any boxes on that switch.

    Astaro can only block traffic going through it.  Now then if you wanted to block traffic between two machines you have locally then you would need another NIC in the astaro box and seperate the two networks that way.  Or you could do some neat tricks with VLANs but I do not think you want to get into that.

    Verify that neither machine is running a firewall locally, be it a third party one or the one built into XP.  What if you shut down the ASL box after the clients have IP addresses, then does it work?

    Dumb question here, but did you enable "File & Printer Sharing" on both machines?

    Hi,
    are you shure that the dhcp is working right and both machines gets the right ip-address if one of them gets no ip from asl then it takes an apipa adress and this maybe not on the same ip-net as the other machine (i think it was someting like 162.x.x.x)

    Thank you to all who replied. it is now working.  it was, as usual, an ID10T error on my part.  I had the "Server" and "Computer Browser" services shut down on one of the machines, so, while it did have "File and Print Sharing" on, it was still not actually running.  But, now I've solved that ... thank you all for your patience.
