TIVO service not connecting

I do not know how to setup (I have version 4) to allow my tivo DVR to access my home network so the tivo service can configure my dvr. Their support says that I need to make sure that certain ports are open, i.e., tcp and UDP port 2190 and TCP ports 8080-8089. Everything else is working fine so what do I need to do?

    Just wanted to add that I have not been able to get TiVo to get updates through the HTTP proxy ... This is a known problem with the form of the HTTP request and the squid proxy ...

     I have mine set to transparent mode, but only have astaro set to have my pc's use the proxy and not the TiVo.

    Yes, the proxy is most likely the issue.  I almost pulled all my hair out trying to get my TiVo working.

    Well, I don't have much hair to pull out but I still have not succeeded. You wrote earlier that you have set the TIVO DVR to not use the astaro proxy--how did you bypass the firewall? The firewall, in my setup, is the first device in line after the cable modem.

    You browse via the ASL web proxy when you configure a program, such as a web browser, to go to port 8080 on the firewall itself for all its information. Port 8080 on the Internal interface is the entry point for the built in squid http proxy. If you don't configure your software to use the proxy, it will go straight out onto the Internet, only using the routing functions of the ASL box.

    I am back--still trying to make this work for my TIVO service. I have very limited capability in configuring the TIVO DVR. I can specify a static IP or use the DHCP server. I can specify the subnet mask. I can specify the Gateway (router) address. I can specify a DNS address. That's it. Will doing any of this cause the TIVO to bypass the ASL web proxy?

    By the way, what does  "ASL" mean?

    I had an epiphany last night that gave me the solution to this problem. The TIVO DVR is now accessing the TIVO service. The previous notes about bypassing the proxy got me thinking. It dawned on me (the amateur that I am at this stuff) that I must have the HTTP proxy setup in such a way that the TIVO is filtering through the proxy. I checked the settings and sure enough, the allowed networks included "my_private" which filtered every IP in my home network through the proxy. I removed this setting and replaced it with specific networks for each of the computers in my home network, excluding the TIVO, thereby keeping the surf protection in place where it counts.

    That solved the problem! HURRAH!!!

    Thanks to all of you for your help, the education, and leading me to the solution.

    Again, for those of you with TIVO service, DO NOT run the TIVO DVR through the HTTP proxy, which means you cannot use the name for your entire home network in the Allowed Networks setting.

    [/ QUOTE ] If you do not have, or configure, specific web proxy options on your TIVO, you will always be bypassing the proxy. Unless, of cause, you have configured the web proxy on your ASl box to act as a transparent proxy, in the Webadmin settings. This I recommend that you do not do.

    The individual who setup the ASL software for me DID set the web proxy to act as a transparent proxy. sounds like I should change this setting. What are the drawbacks to transparent mode? What should I change it to?

    [/ QUOTE ]Simply turn transparent mode off. Go Webadmin --> Proxies --> HTTP --> Operating mode: Change it from Transparent to Standard in the drop down list window. That is all it takes.
