secure firewall authentication

I would like to know which authentication mehod for astaro is the most secure. I'm going to be authenticating external users through vpn. I also plain on setting up a dmz for wireless clients. They will have to vpn back into the main lan. I'm running a windows 2000 2003 infradtructure so I can either set up astaro for radius or ldap authentication. My problem with radius is that it uses pap.

    While the Radius client-server communication is not all that secure, it is nevertheless a local LAN backend communication between a directory server (Windows) and a RAS server (ASL). As such, it is not really exposed to any external surveilance attempts.

    Of greater security concern, is the length and complexity of the account passwords used for remote access, and the VPN method used (PPTP or IPsec). PPTP  is significantly less secure in its encryption than IPsec, and weak access passwords can be subjected to dictionary attacks.

    Thanks for the reply but has anyone here configured authentication to use active directory. If so how is it working out for you. Also are there any advantages to using the active directory authentication?
