Astaro won't handle Dynamic IP's from Service Prov

I was talking to a buddy who's setup Astaro in a similar situation as I, and he assured me that I can not run Astaro between my internet and a switch and then assign different dynamic IPs (assignd by provider) to my internal computers.

Is this true?

Right now I have

Cable > Switch > computers with own (internet assigned dynamic) ip's and router with own ip (internet assigned dynamic)-router shares its one ip with a few computers that don't need their own external ip's

So how can I run a router between the service provider abd switch, and have it handle dynamic IP's from the service provider? Seems possible to me, but I havn't tried anything.

If it's possiblet, will Astaro let me or do I need a good Hardware Router?

    You can have Astaro even if you have dynamic IP from you´r ISP. I have Astaro installed here and have dynamic IP from my ISP. And i have no problem with it. Do you have any domains you will go throu Astaro? You can use dns2go if you have dynamic ip. Hope its help you.

    As far as I know ASL doesnt support DHCP relay like Cisco IOS ip-helper address.  [:(]

    And even if it does you will need to add static routes in your ASL to be able to use the same net on both external and internal net. Witch would require that the ASL knows the ip's assigned to the internal machines and update the static routes dynamicly. 

    So I'd say: what you are trying to accomplice is'nt possible.

    That's a huge bummer.

    I get the impression the first poster is only refering to one IP addy, but he's got a good suggestion. Is there anyway to merge dns2go or similar with what I want to accomplish?

    Does anyone know of any linux that will accomplish DHCP-relay?

    After some researching, I found that I need a BOOTP enabled router to accomplish DHCP-relay.

    I found:

    Is there anyway to merge such tools as the first link (DHCP-relay for linux) with Astaro?

    If Astaro won't do it for me   , what would be recommended? Seems freeSco, debian, and win2k support dhcp-relaying.

    Hi TrixSlice,
    the main reason for using a firewall is to protect your internal computers.
    One task how to do this is, only the firewall has an external (from your provider assigned) IP-Address. DHCP or Static doesn't matter. Your internal computers should have their own IP-Address Range (best would be a private Range souch as 192.168.x.x).
    These Addresses could be assigned static (manual task at each pc) or by a "private"-DHCP (your astaro could be dhcp-server) for them.
