shaping incoming traffic seems to work?

I read parts of this document:

and played a little with tc, and it seems its quite easy to shape incoming traffic. I didnt have much time to experiment, but a quick test revealed that http clearly got more bandwidth than ftp, as i intended. This is working almost flawless on the neat little BBIagent floppy router, and im wondering why this seemingly easy aproach isnt included in astaro? To give an example, i was able to download full speed while playing unreal tournament, only with a few short lags as proof of my massive leech abuse, while using BBIagent.

I dont know much about hov htb works, and i dont know if its a bad thing to do... Before you start flaming me, keep in mind that im still a linux novice, and should be treated as such  [;)]

If this is all crap, i'd be glad if somebody could give a brief explanation [:)]

    The article you pasted seems to only mention incoming traffic ?  (Correct me if I'm wrong, I only had a quick glance).

    The only way I know of to control incoming traffic is to drop packets that are coming in, in excess of the bandwidth you specify.  ie if the inbound queue overflows a certain amount, start dropping packets until the max rate is achieved.

    Your ISP or other service provider sends you data at X rate... You have no control over this whatsoever.

    All's you can do is drop the packets that exceed a certain speed and then the service provider will resend them.  Personally I think this is a rather dirty way of doing things that chews up a lot of resources.

    Controlling outbound traffic is a lot easier.

    Yeah, dropping packets is said to be the only way.. But im still curious to how this works? the HTB documentation is a bit messy, and im having a hard time understanding it completely.

    Anyway, this would make a truly great addition to ASL, no matter how it works. If you want to try it out with an easy to use interface, boot up BBIagent. Go to http://BBIagent.net and use their wizard to create a bootdisk, thats the only thing required... it boots from a floppy.
