ifconfig ip-adress settings

Hello all,
if i try to change the ip-dress of a asl-interface via :

ifconfig eth8 192.168.100.x/30

 or

ifconfig eth8 192.168.100.x mask 255.255.255.252

the subnetmask is ignored and there is always set the mask wich is the default for the adress-class of the used ip-adress.
could anyone tell me the right syntax on asl4 to do this ?

    I believe the system might ignore the netmask because it knows the 192.168.0.0 network is a private class c network.

    In WebAdmin under Definations for Networks you will see a static defination for this class c network. I'm not sure if or how you can get around it.
