Direct Connect

Hi all,

I have a few buddies that I like to share music with (Then we all benefit from our own collections, and our own encoding standards, as opposed to "See what you can find" from Kazaa), and since I installed an Astaro box in between, I havn't been able to connect.

I'm using Astaro 3.2xx.  I have it set to masquerade from Internet to Intranet, which works.  I have a number of filter rules opened (POP3, SMTP, Citrix), and I need to do the same with DC.

I don't know, however, what's behind setting it up.  I have it set to automatically resolve and grab my ip, which is updated through dyndns.  It says something about ports 1412, and 440 (I believe).

I've gotten everything else to work (Programs - Outlook, Citrx, etc..), so this is confusing me.  Do I need some other forwarding rules, or am I just opening and allowing the wrong ports?

    Hi,
    a little more information would be great. 
    Are you trying to use a VPN between your friends and yourself, or are your friends internal? Do you want to use MS SMB to share your data? How is your setup, which way do packets traverse, and which protocols are involved?

    I'm sorry.  Direct Connect is software created by  Neo-Modus, and is a file sharing application for it.

    There is an open source program built off the standard called  DC Plus-Plus, and there is actually a client built off of that called  oDC  built off of it.

    I don't know what more to tell you, except that there is over 1.2 petabytes shared over the networkd, or more than Kazaa, grokster, and the old napster combined.

    I don't know much about networks (That's partially why I installed Astaro - I learn well by necessity), so I don't know what to tell you about protocols.  I'm sure it's on one of those sites, if anyone is patient enough to baby this new user through it. [:)]

    You need to open the ports Direct Connect uses.

    A bit of reseach on the Direct Connect web site should point you in the right direction.

    Q: I have a NATing router and would like to set Direct Connect up for active mode. What ports does it use?
    A: By default, Direct Connect Uses port 412 for TCP and UDP data. This can be changed in the Direct Connect settings. To make Direct Connect work properly with your NATing router, you must enter your routers WAN IP address in Direct Connect's "Force Direct Connect to report this IP address" text box, and check associated check box.

    It's not working.

    I set up a Service Definition:
    "Direct Connect"  TCP + UDP 1:65535 411:412

    Then I set up a packet filter rule:
    Intranet_Direct Connect_Any_Allow

    And I also added a second set for allowing port 1412, because that does something (Not sure what, but I'll get to that in a second):

    Rule 2:
    "Direct Connect 2" TCP + UDP 1024:65535 1411:1413

    Then I allowed that the same way in the Packet Rules section.  Still nothing, so I checked the filter live log.

    I get stuff like this:
    11:08:50 68.xxx.xxx.xxx 4202  ->  209.xxx.xxx.xxx 1412 TCP SYN  

    I have no idea what that means.  I'm sure some of you do, though, so any ideas would be appreciated.

    Try adding a rule allowing DC traffic INTO your network as well.

    ie: Any DC_Ports RedIPofFirewall

    DNAT rule:

    From Any (DC Port) Dest: RedIP
    Redirect to IP of DC LAN box

    Ok, so here's what I'm trying (Back from a long break, no?)
    ---
    Name:  Direct Connect

    Rule Type: DNAT/SNAT

    Packets to Match:
    ---Source Address: PPPoE_Interface
    ---Destination Address:  Intranet
    ---Service: Direct Connect

    Now, these are what I'm not clear on, so I just selected any for the two options below:

    Change Source To: Any
    Change Destination To: Any


    I wasnt' sure what else to do about those things, so any clues would be much appreciated.  I know I'm doing something wrong, but I'm not sure what.

    Source Address should be Any
    Dest address should be PPPoE interface

    (ie Any traffic heading to PPPoE interface goes here....)
    Your packet filter rules should allow traffic from PPPoE interface to the machine you want (Use the definitions for DC you created earlier).

    Then DC traffic heading to your PPPoE interface will get forwarded to the machine you specify in the SNAT/DNAT rules and your packet filter rules will allow the traffic to pass.
