Bandwith problem

Hi,

I'm running Astaro (3.x) on a PII 266MHz box. I know the specs are a bit low but it's working.

The thing I've noticed is that when uploading at maximum bandwidth (80 kbps) (from my internal network to internet) the download speed drops dramatically. When downloading I usually come up to 230 kbps but when at the same time uploading it drops to 100 kbps.

Is my machine not capable of handling high throughput or is it something to do with my network cards? Using 3Com 3c905 and 3c905C.

    I'm running a PII-266 as well and I get ~1500 kbps throughput with no problems. I'm using 10/100 cards for internal and DMZ but use a 10Mbit card on the external interface. What other services are you running? Squid, or other proxies will put a higher load on a marginal machine but the PII-266 works fine for my 1500/128 ADSL line.

    Thanks for reply!

    Squid is not running, just a few port forwards and automatic up2date. SMTP is not running either.

    Is it poosible that the NICS are not in full duplex mode? I think I had to explicitly enable that on my older 3C509 cards.

    The connection to internet is via ADSL, maybe it's that modem that can't cope?
