I would get you are using NAT/Masq ?

If so, you can't get them working.
Try another instant messenger such as Eyeball Chat

According to Microsoft you need an UPnP aware firewall.

I agree, but UPnP isn't exactly what I would call a secure thing based on it's very nature. It is kind of scary if you think about what it does.

I would like the ability to use it in Astaro (like for more protected networks), but I think other features probably should have higher priorities.

Use Eyeball Chat instead ?
It can connect to MSN as well as the Eyeball network and only uses 5 ports.
Works thru NAT & MASQ for voice & video chat
