Alternative to running MSN/Netmeeting through firewall.

I have just found a program called Eyeball Chat that is an alternative to MSN/Netmeeting.

It works great through NAT & ASL.  It can use as few as 5 ports, supports voice, video and file transfer as well as the usual text chat.
Voice quality is very good.

It supports MSN, Yahoo and AIM users too !
It's free from www.eyeballchat.com

(Note, you need to grab the registry patch from the support section to force it down to 5 ports but it works very well, I'm dumping MSN).

    Hi Simon,

    You say it also support audio/video with MSN users, but also when using NAT?
    Or is only text chay available whit NAT.
    What about file transfer with NAT?

    I have yet to test with NAT.  The authors claim it will work with any firewall.
    You can definately set which ports it uses. (Only 5!).
    I am switching my LAN here over to NAT in 4-5 days. (Currently all my boxes use internet visible IP's since I have a class C).

    It would be great, but my guess is it won't work.
    That's because the messenger protocol uses UPNP (Universal Plug and Play, more in detailed described at http://hometoys.com/htinews/aug01/articles/microsoft/upnp.htm)

    The problem is: When an msn user sends an audio/or videa request to you, and that user is behind a natting firewall, it puts his private IP address in the data packet.
    Your messenger client is ot looking into the IP header for the I{ address to reply to (which is the normal way of doing it, because that's where the natted address is) but he's looking into the data packet, and guess what it finds: a private IP address. And your client replies to 192.168.1.1 or 172.16.1.2 or whathever IP address the remote user uses. And routing wise you have a problem.

    There is a solution, but it's not implemented in Astaro, and I don't know if there are plans to do this: http://linux-igd.sourceforge.net/
    which turns the firewall into a UPNP enabled firewall.

    Yes, Eyeball Chat works through my private IP masq.  Voice and video OK.

    Yes there is that I guess but its not as widespread in use as MSM

    I just started using Astaro, after not using for a long time.  I need help setting up Eyeball Chat.  How do I setup my machine to use it?  I already installed the reg fix for ports TCP=5500-5501 and UDP 5700-5702.  

    Second question, can I have it where more than one machine on my network can use the software (don't have to be at the same time)

    I was wondering why it was never working, dispite the fact that no packets were being filtered.

    Now say that the roles were reversed.  YOU are the one with the NATting firewall, and the other person has no firewall at all.  Would it be possible to set up a NAT rule to change the source address of your packets so the remote end doesn't get confused?  For example a rule that replaces the source address on every packet you send to the remote machine with your public IP address.  Or... shit... is this what my standard internet masq rule does (ie. SRC translation to MASQ__eth1)?
