VPN across satellite via 2 Astaro FW's

I think the latency over the satellite link will upset IKE.  there are certain expectations on responses to the IKE exchange.

ESP will have little difficulty, but the replay window may well give you problems.  64 packets do NOT fill up a satellite link (I am assuming you are using a TCP sliding window for effective use of the satellite link).

I am currently looking at using ASL over satellite IP connections (DVB-RCS type of VSAT, such as www.tachyon.net), for shared Internet access, VPN and VoIP from/to remote locations where international humanitarian organisations typically work, such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa.

Has anyone tried VPN and/or VoIP over VSAT using Astaro boxes yet?

I used this at one stage from home - using Win2k as the client and connecting using PPTP to the ASL box. It worked fine this way for email access etc. Latency will be the big issue as others have mentioned.

Now I can confirm that IPSec VPN between two Astaro 4.015 boxes works well even over a double-hop satellite (VSAT) connection.

Yes, the round trip time is usually around 1250 ms for the double hop configuration, which is a DVB-RCS type VSAT system.
