One muppet requests kind help from valued peers on mysterious subject: - subnets.
OK, so it's nigh on impossible to use NetMeeting voice and video with NAT. Supposing you've got some spare Internet addresses you could use to make a subnet and connect a few PCs through the firewall WITHOUT NAT - HOW?
If you've got 13 usable IP addresses in your ADSL external network, say 213.154.64.2 to 213.154.64.14, with your ADSL gateway at the bottom, 213.154.64.1. (So your network is 213.154.64.0/28.) You want two subnets, the bottom half of these addresses containing your astaro box at 213.154.64.2, plus any internal firewalled servers' NATed addresses (e.g. POP3, FTP, HTTP servers). In the top half of your address range now (213.154.64.8/29) you want another subnet, also behind the firewall (in another DMZ), but containing hosts with real life Internet addresses so you can use NetMeeting etc. (H323 protocol stuff) from them.
The question is, how do you get the Astaro box to respond to (and forward) packets for those real addresses? If your ADSL gateway simply dumps packets to your address range onto your cables, why should the Astaro box respond to them?
I'm sure this is a question anyone with good subnet experience will answer in a jiffy, so come on kind souls - help a muppet make his boss happy!
Cheers!
Justin.
