I have been running a registered 3 nic ASL box for motnhs now. I am running 2.023 currently. About 24 hours ago I started having inbound email troubles. Inbound messages were getting rejected. No changes had been made to the ASL config.
I currently have a service group "MAIL" that contains SMTP, IDENT and PING services which came predefined by ASL. I have a filter rule sets as follows:
Rule #2 From Any {MAIL} to Mailserver ALLOW
Rule #3 From Mailserver {MAIL} to Any ALLOW
In this configuration about half SMTP traffic fails. Why this changed I do not know. When I test from the outside of the ASL I get NULL connections (SMTP never starts greeting) and the server's log file shows a Null connection from xx.xx.xx.xx.
Outbound email will either work fine or when it tries to establish the SMTP connect it will just hang and time out (deferred) without getting the port on the remote machine.
I have also tried changing the rules to specific services and not using the service group MAIL.
Anybody have any ideas?
