adding backup-route in case of downtime

Next week we are going to setup a vpn between different offices to replace our leased lines. We would like to be able go through a different route in case the vpn or worse the internet connection goes down. Is this possible? If it is, can it be done automatically?
The current leased line routers would be reconfigured to dial an isdn line to the other office.

Another option would be to route traffic from A to B through C in case B is not available from A.

    Apparently nobody here can help with this, as can be seen with other postings regarding this topic.  [:S]  

    The VPN is by now a fact. We now have connection to and from all our offices (A-B, A-C, B-C) at 256kpbs, as opposed to the 64kpbs leased lines that were only from A-B and B-C.

    I invested some time in getting slightly familiar in the prompt and I was able to add a route with metric "2" for the alternative route, only when simulating the vpn going down, it also deleted the secondary route. Adding the route again when the VPN was down however gave the desired result. Packets were returned to the leased line router.

    Any ideas on how to make the route persistant as under NT (-p)? I also tried adding a route like 192.168.0.0/24 gw 192.168.x.y, which didn't get deleted, but also didn't route.  [:(] 

    Or perhaps the way to go is to use some for of script (I would need detailed info about that, because that goes beyond my linux knowledge)

    if the Astaro configuration program restarts due to
    a change of the configuration, all routes as well as
    the packet filters will be resetted.
