Which is better, Proxies or Masquerade?

I am trying to setup the astaro firewall.  We have three interfaces on the firewall (External, Internal, and DMZ).  I understand that you could either use masquerade or the build in application proxies to allow my internal client to talk to the outside world.  The question I got is which is a better way to go?  Which methods will allow all protocol (or at least the most) to communication between Internet and my internal client (ie. http, ftp, irc, nntp, netmeeting, Instant messager, real audio, etc etc).  I understand that masquerade have some limitation on some protocol, and I presume the proxies may have the same issue.  Any feedback or advise will be strongly appreicated.
