iptables

hi,
I am working on the firewalling on my new astaro firewall, i have added some allow rules and then put a deny rule at the end.

but then i portscan my machine and it says i have everything open!
very wierd. i am enabling the rules and everything

i even went to the console and did a /usr/local/bin/iptbales -L and i came up saying there were no rules!

my other problem is that my machine is running extremly slow with a very large amount of disk activity even when nothing is being done (i.e.3am).

i have done all the up2dates

i have noticed that qmail-send is always running at around 10% on proccessor usage i thought this was a tad high.
