Definding a new Network - HELP

I am trying to defind a new network for the static IP that I have been provided by local cable company.

IP: 172.32.1.16
SM: 255.255.254.0
GW: 172.32.1.1

When clicking the "add" button to add the following:

Name:  External
IP: 172.32.1.0
SM: 255.255.254.0

I get a message stating "Netmask 255.255.254.0 doesn't make sence with hostroute!"

I understand that the cable company could have subnetted the network in a different way, but that's what I have to go by.

Any ideas?

  • Hi,

    try this: ;-)

    IP: 172.32.1.16
    SM: 255.255.255.255
    GW: 172.32.1.1

This should work very well. You got one static ip and this means that your netmask must be 255.255.255.255 (Hostroute/in the network definition).

The other netmask is only used by the settings:
    /Network/Interfaces/Network card(eth"x")

  • sorry, i missed something.

In the network definition the is no netmask possible !

Info: the correct network ip for the netmask 255.255.254.0 is in this case 172.32.0.0 ! ;-)
