mail on the internal net not working

while I was able to setup ASL to route an external IP to a internal machine for mail (I.e. I can get mail on my server) it seems that the .forwards on it are not working anymore. further investigations shown that since I got all my machines behind the firewall they can't send mails each other (while I still can send outside). I think this is a problem similar to this with problem with webserver in a DMZ.

Anyway I would appreciate any help on this topic. my machines are running Linux or IRIX. ASL version is 1.940

    I'm still having problems with this topic. Now I can confirm my problem is due to DNS resolution from the sendamil agent (I found in the log it is trying to send to the resolved IP number instead of the internal one. Now, I know I'm runnig a bit off-topic, but maybe I can change something in sendmail config instead touching the firewall/hosts definitions. please, if someone has an idea, yell at me  [;)]
