Periodically losing connection

Hi all,
I have a minor - but irritating problem with the wonderful ASL.  Every so often I can lose connectivity to the ASL server.  I could be browsing, telnetting or whatever at the time.  This happens on both Win2K and linux clients.

If I open a console and ping the server I get no response.  However - if I go to the ASL box, logon and ping the client from the ASL box it will ping it no problem.  Then when I go back to the client it can ping the ASL box once more.  In other words, if a client loses connection to ASL, simply pinging it from the ASL box will re-establish a connection.

I am sure I have seen this behaviour with other linux boxes so I am willing to accept that it may not be an ASL problem at all - but I am sure someone knows the answer.

    I don't have an answer but am experiencing the same problem.

    It seems to happen about every 30-60 mins where ASL just wont respond to anything for about 10-20sec, then it just comes back up.

    Very odd.

    Well good - at least I am not alone - it does appear to have lessened a bit now - although it has not gone away.  Strange that there were no more helpful replies though.  I have an out of the box, nothing strange, astaro setup - I would have thought that this problem was a bit more widespread!

    When this happens look at the ARP entry for the FW's IP on the machine that is having the problem connecting (client).  I noticed that the client had an MAC address from another NIC on the FW.  I just cleared out the ARP on the client and it works fine.  I do not know how or why it recieved the wrong MAC (sounds like a question for Tech Support).

    Let me know if you find the same thing....

    You have both NICs connected to the same hub ? 
    The manual state that ASL should be config using one NIC/hub or switch.
    In case the cards are on the same switch at least segment it with a VLAN. (ASL manual page 52).

    Mishou - I can't say for basskiwi - but only one of my NICS is connected to the switch.  The other one is connected directly to our leased line router - I didn't know that it says to do this in the manual - this is just the way it is done.

    Anyway - I believe that I have sorted out the problem - and yes you are going to laugh.

    The mail route for notifications was mis-configured and the machine appears to have got into a mail-loop sending a notification, receiving a bounce, telling me about the bounce and again and again - the first I noticed about it (apart from thinking it had been a little quiet for a while) was when /var/chroot-smtp filled up and the machine shut down - funny thing is I was just about to post another whine to this list complaining that my hard disk would not stop churning..
