PING problem, maybe IP aliasing to blame

hi there

I'm having a problem with ping on ASL 1.82

ICMP on firewall and ICMP forward are enabled.
I have eth0 with public IP and eth1 with private IP.
To get to the machine with the private IP I am using IP alias on eth0 with another public IP and routing/DNAT on the firewall.

I can't seem to ping anything from the private IP machine.

Do i need to set up masquerading and/or SNAT for this to work?
Will masquerading work with IP aliasing??

thanks
