FaceTime calls are incredibly laggy through the UTM

All FaceTime calls that go through Sophos UTM are incredibly jumpy. Whenever I make a FaceTime call to someone through the UTM one end or the other usually ends up saying "Poor Connection" while the audio stays consistent. When it doesn't say that, it is constantly jumpy and laggy. I have turned off all antivirus and I don't do any SSL decryption. The odd thing is that Facebook Messenger Video and Skype will work just fine. If I FaceTime over Cellular the call goes great without a hitch. I have been trying to solve this for a long time. I have also set my family up in another location with UTM and it is especially awful when going through two UTMs. I am on the latest version and still no relief (9.351-3). (As a note, the traffic is sometimes identified at RTP, and other times as FaceTime in the Traffic Monitor)

Has anyone else experienced lag or know a solution to this issue?

Thanks!

  • Thanks so much, @BAlfson. Turns out that the Intrusion Prevention System was seeing it as a UDP Flood Attack. I had turned off the IPS and all other features previously but hadn't noticed any improvement until seeing this in the logs and explicitly turning off the option: Network Protection > Intrusion Prevention > Anti-DoS/Flooding > UDP Flood Protection > Uncheck "Use Flood Protection." I would love to keep this on, but turning it off for now seems like the best option. Eventually I will create an exception for the service. Thank you for the link! (For others to reference, I did not have to open any ports for this to be resolved)

  • Could he not leave UDP flood protection and adjust the source and destination packet rates until he finds a number that doesn't block FaceTime, have a good starting number?
