dynamic dns

I used to use dyndns for my dynamic DNS, and it always worked great. Of course that went away for free.

I am trying to use FreeDNS, but not having any luck.

Inrerface
External(WAN)
home.afraid.org
myusername
mypassword

I save it and turn it on and it says an update attempt is in progress, but nothing happens.

I only use this for releasing of Spam that is a false positive. 

Questions

1. Does this not work like dyndns's wildcard option?
2. Am I missing a step with FreeDNS?

I do not control my own hosted sites DNS... I take it there is no way to use my own domain to do this is there?

    A couple thoughts...

    As long as the MAC address of your External interface doesn't change (add the current MAC address as a Virtual MAC on the 'Hardware' tab) and the ISP's last-hop router in front of you doesn't change, you're likely to keep the same IP for years.  No reason you can't use that in public DNS.

    If you can get FreeDNS working, you can create a CNAME entry in public DNS to point an FQDN of your domain to home.afraid.org.

    I do not control my own hosted sites DNS...

    I don't understand - if you own a domain name, you control your own DNS.
