Qos help needed, not sure what I need it or ext?

Hi,

I want to implement qos on our utm but I am unsure how to do it.   Basically we only have 8meg down and 1meg up, so I want to set it so that I do not bottleneck.  I have 5 users who use the web, an exchange server, and vpn's running.  I kind of see what I have to do but the part that I am unsure about is in bandwidth pools and download throttling you have to select internal or external interface when creating a rule.  What does that do? Does it mean if I select internal that rule only applies to traffic internally and the opposite with external.?

Basically I need to slice up the traffic going both ways, but unsure how to do this.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Jk

  • That's more a "OK, I'm writing this down to help me think" kind of comment than a question, jk. [;)]  The Help/Manual is a good place to start.  Here's a good place to ask specific questions.

Generally, you want to make reservations (Bandwidth Pools) on the External interface to guarantee outbound traffic.  If you see that there is specific download traffic causing a problem, you can limit (Download Throttling) that on the External interface, but I wouldn't do that until there's a complaint.

  • Thanks for the reply, when do you use Bandwidth pools and when do you use download throttling?  From this quote i found on here they can each do the same thing?  So which method would you use when?

    Thanks

To guarantee bandwidth for download traffic, bind bandwidth pool to the Internal interface.

To guarantee bandwidth for upload traffic, bind bandwidth pool to the External interface.

To throttle download traffic, bind throttling rule to the External interface.

To throttle upload traffic, bind throttling rule to the Internal interface.

  • That's not the way I would do it with the current version and, even in prior versions, I wouldn't have done it that way.  My post above says where I would start.  When you want to create your first Download Throttling rule, start a new thread that states the situation that you want to correct - the problem.
