troubleshooting slow network spped - where to start

I've got a Sophos UTM 9.208 running as a virtual machine on ESXi 5.5.
There are 4 interfaces, mostly of type VMXNet3, however one of them being a E1000 (I could not get the VM up with another VNXNet3-interface, god knows why).
Now, when trying to move data between my internal network and the DMZ (which happens to be connetced uisng the E1000 interface), the connection is dead slow (around 300 KBit/s), although both interfaces are running at gigabit speed.
I have some traffic selectors and bandwidth pools configured on the VM, but they are all connected to the external interface.
I can't find any issues on the ESXi host itself, so I think, maybe I'll start my troubleshooitng on the Sophos VM, but where could I start to troubleshoot this issue ?
