Correctly Interpreting Reports

I'm a little confused about the numbers I'm seeing. On the dashboard I have the Top Applications widget and if I sum the traffic I see right now I arrive at ~24GB.

Next I open the 'bandwidth usage' report view and see all my internal clients (as expected), but the top result is 'External (WAN)'. So if I sum all my internal clients they equal the 'External (WAN)'. I understand why the numbers would be equal but I'm a little confused as to why the external interface even shows up on the report.

Taking the next step, the sum of all the items on the 'bandwidth usage' report equals the ~24GB number I see on the dashboard. So from an ISP bandwidth cap perspective I'm seeing double the traffic I'm actually using. That seems counter intuitive to me, especially on the 'Top Applications' widget.

Can anything be done to get the External interface numbers out of the reporting?

On a related note, is there a bar graph (or similar) view that would show me total traffic on the external interface by day, week, etc?
