Running UTM 9 in Virtualbox on Ubuntu host using a single NIC using 802.1q VLAN tag?

I have a ubuntu box running a 802.1q tagged VLANs to my switch through a single NIC.  

I have 2 VLANs created eth0.2 and eth0.3

I am trying to figure out if I can run the UTM on a Virtualbox and have the "external" on VLAN3 and the "internal" on VLAN2.

The idea is then test some hosts on the VLAN2 to route traffic through the UTM VM.  

There is a reason for this madness.   
1.  I do not want to dedicate a box for firewall (for the time being) 
2.  I want certain IPs on my network to go through the IPS/Antivirus/URL filtering engine where other networks do not.

    Hi, J, and welcome to the User BB!

    I can't think of a way to avoid having an untagged virtual interface to begin with and to browse to from another instance on the Vbox to configure.  You then can certainly configure two other interface definitions as VLANs.

    If they are untagged in the Virtual host, then it should work OK.

    Maybe I am not phrasing my question correctly.
    Can the UTM be used on a host with a single NIC if I used tagged VLANs to distinguish the inside and outside interfaces.

    I'm running the latest utm 9 software on a spare pc with 3 nics.
    nic 1 = wan
    nic 2 = Lan
    nic 3 = i want to use this as a VLAN to seperate WLAN as a guest or whatever. But after creating a VlAN no ip adress wil give.

    Question = is it possible to create a Multiple VLAN like VLAN 10 and VLAN 11 on NIC 3 and directly plug in a Engenius ECB600 (So without a switch). The ECB600 support VLAN TAGG. Then create a firewall rules to allow VLAN 10 be fully accessible to NIC 2. 

    Also each VLAN to have its one IP/dhcp if possible.


    Can someone push me in the right direction.
