I have a problem that is very easily reproduced and quite frustrating as I haven't been able to find a solution after weeks of hacking.
Starting with the Sophos UTM 9 appliance fresh from the factory, when I first log on, I get presented with the quick setup wizard. As part of the setup wizard, I am prompted to set up my WAN connection, which is PPPoE.
The wizard completes, and the PPPoE connection works — I can browse the internet, etc.
However, if I go to Interfaces & Routing, and perform any modification of the PPPoE connection (e.g. edit password, click 'Reconnect', or disable/enable), it fails to reconnect. No amount of disabling/enabling or even rebooting the UTM will allow it to connect.
If I delete the interface and create a new PPPoE interface with the exact same details, it will not connect. If I go to Logs > PPPoE, there are no logs shown for PPPoE whatsoever — it is just blank.
If I factory reset the UTM and in the quick setup wizard I tell it to skip setting up the WAN connection and then later on go to add the PPPoE interface manually, it also doesn't work at all.
The only way I can get it to reconnect is factory reset the UTM, go through the quick setup wizard, and set up the PPPoE connection as part of the wizard. Then it works until disabled/enabled and then breaks until next factory reset.
DHCP-based WAN works fine, so I was able to use another router to check that the firmware is completely up-to-date (this was easily reproducible on both the factory firmware version, and after having updated). This bug is very easy to reproduce, and it is therefore very surprising to me that it exists.
I've never had this trouble with any other router before. It is my first experience with the Sophos UTM, which is leaving a very sour taste in my mouth.
Here I was thinking setting up IPv6 would be the hard part...
