Bridging. Centurylink/Actiontec. C1000A

Is it possible to connect a Centuylink c1000a to a Utm on a virthal machine?

Im new to dsl and am puzzled as to whAt is possible.  I may be trying something that wont work.

Steps ive tried:

Set actiontec to bridged.
Set utm external interface to PPPoE
Connected latter to ethernet interface on Actiontec. 

No connections. 

PPPOE log gets "Timeout waiting for PADO packets.  Unable to complete Discovery PPPoE

    I'm no expert on VMWare, but I think you need to do one of the following:

    a. configure PPPoE in VMWare for the NIC hooked to the modem
    OR
    b. assign the NIC directly to the Astaro VM with no VSwitch.
