PPPoE and CenturyLink, C1000A bridged

Alright,
I am running newest UTM 9.
Modem is an Actiontec C1000A.

It works when I setup PPPoE though the C1000A.
When I set it to transparent bridging, restart, and then use my UTM's WAN interface, set PPPoE VDSL is checked, put in username and password.

Then, watching PPPoE logs, I am seeing PADI packets going out to broadcast MAC address, my MAC as src.  But, getting no PADO back.

Now, the PPP logs are empty.  Am I missing something here?

I see it is using rp-pppoe.

Finally got with a great rep from CenturyLink, only took me 5 calls.  [:)]  But he said on his side, he could see the DSL link, but no authentication coming out.  

Should I be seeing stuff in PPP?

WAN interface card is a RealTek card, if that helps any.  I can get more info if needed.

    I don't think it's related to PPPoE.  In fact, you might have been having problems with the modem handling the PPPoE, but the effective throughput appeared to be OK, so you didn't suspect.  Now, when the connection has to be reliable for the session to establish, it can't make it.  That's all just guessing though - I don't know much about the blue smoke in those modems! [;)]

    I'm going to try and force 1G full duplex, and then half and see if I can get it to PPPoE.  If not, I'll swap the C1000a out.  

    I wish the c1000a had better logging, or reporting so I could see if the packets are even making it to the C1000A to be processed.  I could wireshark, but... that's so much work.... hahaha.

    Once I get PPPoE working... IPv6 time.  [:)]  IPv6 WAN gets me all excited.  LoL.

    Well, after playing around some, I managed to get a response!

    In the PPPoE settings, I had VDSL selected.  CenturyLink uses VDSL, but i guess I don't need it for PPPoE.

    Now, it gets to requesting auth, and then times out waiting for a response.

    But!  This is much further then I was getting before.

    I only got about 10 minutes on lunch to test when I ran home.

    Alright, the issue was the Realtec.

    I put a Sundance technologies 1G card in, and it worked.

    I would love any suggestions you can provide on setting this up. I bricked 2 modems yesterday and all I did was change them to bridged mode. They would not even recover back to normal after resetting them. I really want my utm back but i am afraid to try it again without some more details on the process.

    What provider are you using?
    And when recovering the modem, how did you do it?
    I had to hold the reset button in for almost a full 30 seconds to get it back to normal.
    ALso, what network card is the UTM using?

    CentryLink VDSL 40m

    Sometimes held for full minute. That's what is preventing me from trying it again, it never recovers

    Realtek on board and 2 intel pci-e cards

    I suggest using one of the Intel cards.  The realtec seemed to fail.

    Set your C1000A in transparent bridge mode.  Give it a bit to do that... and after it reloads the page for you, pull the power and restart it.

    Then, on your UTM, set the WAN interface for PPPoE, and set your username and password.  Do not check the VDSL check box. Even though it is VDSL, you don't need to check it, because I think the C1000A does the VDSL stuff.

    Set reconnect delay to 1 minute.  My MTU is 1492.  Then save, and watch your PPPoE logs.  If you can, copy and paste them to me.

    Did you change the ip of the modem first? Since it is the gateway both the utm and modem would have the same ip?

    Got it to work! I think it was defining a static ip on the wan interface. It automagicly grabbed the default gateway ip in my range using dhcp. I will assign the others and test

    I did take the realtek it of the mix but it was originally assigned to the lan interface
