[Question] PPPoE Echo Requests

From my understanding, ASG pings out to see if the connection is active, and after 5 failed attempts it disconnects and retires.

pppd-pppoe[9581]: No response to 5 echo-requests

My question is, if it does ping, what does it ping to tell if the connection is alive?

if it doesn't ping, what does it do instead?

In the attempt to debug a issue that's appeared the last 3 days (constant internet dropping) so i wanna confirm what this means.
