link aggregation knowledge

Hi,

I have a few questions about link aggregation.

1. When I team 2 nics, does my switch need to support teaming aswell? I mean, do I also have to configure the two ports from astaro connected to the switch as a team in the switch?

2. I am using astaro in hyper-v and the two nics I want to team are on different virtuall Hyper-V switches (nics). Is this also supported?

3. If the teamed ports don't have to be on the same switch, is this a kind of failover for a broken switch?

    1. Yes, NIC teaming requires support from the NIC driver as well as the switch (or router).

    2. I don't know.

    3. you can setup failover with multipath routing instead.

    1. I've done this with a cheap Linksys gigabit 8-port consumer-type router before, but I know almost nothing about Hyper-V and zilch about routers available for it.

    2. It's supported on two different physical switches.  Agian, I'm ignorant about Hyper-V.

    3. That's how I've tested it along with "teamed" NICs in an HP server, for example.  Barry, wouldn't multipathing require a second set of aggregated NICs?

    I was assuming you couldn't do it with 2 different switches, and was thinking multipath would work instead.

    Maybe it can be done.

    Uhm, now I'm a bit unsure....all just guess something,no one has a clear mind... O.O

    First, I don't want to setup a failover with link aggregation, this was only an additional opinion about using link aggregation....

    The reason why I want to use this feature is to extend the bandwith for my internal connection from 1Gb/s to 2Gb/s.

    Is there a possibility to ask an astaro specialist about that?

    As far as I know, I did this NIC teaming once with two broadcom NICs and used therefore this configuration software BACS (braodcom advanced configuration software). After I teamed the NICs up with this software I got an extra virtual networkinterface which was created by the software and had o be used as the teamed interace.

    So this would be on driver side, but since I use Hyper-V and Astaro has all those drivers build in, it must somehow work in a bit different way.

    I would be glad if someone with astaro premium support could ask those guys about this and let me know.

    I can speak with some general Link Aggregation knowledge:

    Link Aggregation is generally used to bundle multiple physical cables into a single logical cable.

    Aggregation works best if both sides of the link are configured to accept it. It works even better if both sides are using the same load balancing algorithm 

    The load is shared across all of the active links in a bundle based on a load balancing algorithm (MAC hashing / IP hashing / or port hashing), but a single flow as defiled by the algorithm will only use a single link in the bundle.

    If multiple flows get the same hash output ie ([SRCMAC XOR DSTMAC] MOD #ActiveLinks), they will use the same link in the bundle regardless of contention. This may lead to one link getting saturated while another sits idle.

    Unless the switch vendor supports multichassis link aggregation (MLAG), you'd be best to aggregate to a single physical switch.

    Load balancing works great as a fast failover technique, since other links in the bundle will take over the traffic.
