[8.30GA] Why can't we get correct bandwidth totals?

Recently my ISP instituted bandwidth caps [:@][:@] so I have been keeping an eye on the total bandwidth in weekly reports. However there are large discrepancies in the bandwidth usage in different parts of the report. Total bandwidth used should be trivial to calculate for astaro but for some reason its not. Hoping this is fixed in v9 and I don't have to run my own mrtg server for this[:(]

Here are a few pictures of my reports from home astaro. The first two are from the same weekly report and the third one is the daily reports for the whole week. Notice the difference between traffic processed and total traffic for top 10 services in the weekly report (screenshot 1&2). Lets assume that some of that traffic was blocked so there is a difference. Now, if you add all the daily reports for the week (screenshot 3) you get close to the number in the second screenshot. Which number is correct? Probably the one in the second screenshot but I am not too comfortable relying on any of the numbers at this time. Even the connections handled are different. If you add all the connections handled in daily reports (screenshot3) and compare to the weekly report the numbers are off by atleast a few thousand[:S]

    How many Nic's do you have in the machine?
    As I have this trouble.
    Astaro counts all traffic External and Internal Traffic to give the Reported figures.
    The Only way is to look at your External Interface Traffic.

    I agree with your request, I had long discussions with Kai during one of the betas on this subject, I lost.

    Besides Mark's questions, part of the answer is also how many items do you have not logging traffic?

    We also gave up and using ISP own traffic counter. Astaro's counters are messy somehow.

    Thanks for the reply Mark. I have 3 interfaces but almost no traffic on the 3rd interface. So its almost a pure 2NIC firewall with the internal NIC seeing almost the same traffic as external other than the firewall blocks etc. But if you notice my original post, all the daily reports when added together should equal the one weekly report no matter which interfaces are working or logged, but they don't[:O]

     I rememeber that discussion clearly. I believer 8.1 beta and after a long beta it was a loosing battle and Kai suggested a feature request. But a feature request to see how much bandwidth you are using is absurd in my opinion[:P]

    Yes but the problem is that my ISP hasn't developed a counter yet[:D] They will send a letter that I have exceeded my bandwidth and 3 offenses and you are out or upgrade to the higher priced business plan.... yeah for the twisted capitalism of the content providers...[:@]

    Yeah, usage caps are pretty much nonsense in my view.  Sure, maybe stop the real abusers... but in general caps are useless and unfair.  The "bandwidth shortage" cited by most ISPs, in most cases exists entirely in some CEO's imagination.

    Bandwidth caps are about content control. I understand the cable companies doing it since they want you to buy cable from them instead of downloading from Netflix, hulu etc. but I don't understand the telcos reasoning behind it. I don't want to watch my tv over DSL, get over it[:@] Give my fiber to my house and I will rethink. I guess this is their way of fighting net neutrality. 

    Luckily I don't use anywhere close to my allocated cap but the whole concept irks me. Also, I have had the ATT wireless unlimited data plan ever since the first gen iphone and seems they want to get rid of it altogether AT&T Wages Quiet War on Grandfathered Unlimited Users - 2GB Throttle Not So Subtly Pushing Users Toward Meters | DSLReports.com, ISP Information . Everybody wants more more and more and I am tired of paying through the nose for everything[8-)]

    Hi folks,
    I currently have a very (in my opinion) download/upload capability 200/200, I have used anywhere near this for about 6 months, since the kids got jobs.

    My ISP has a download meter and a mail message at various levels and a forum member of whirlpool built and distributes a near realtime download monitor. That is how I can tell the figures that the ASG produces are not real.

    Also every man and his dog's ISP is pushig their version of tv over the web, If the download speed was realistic I might be interested otherwise it is a waste of e-mails.
    One day sounds like a theme for a movie or a song we will get cable (real fibre not foxtel pretend fibre)  with good to excellent speeds 25/5, 50/10 or 100/30 and then tv over the www will be a realistic choice.
    Of course will need to build a bigger/brighter ASG, a challenge I look forward too. Something new to try and test.

    But, in the meantime some realistic figure in the ASG reports would be good.

    12/2 is fine for multiple video streams.  

    We have that speed.  We "cut the cord" about 1 year ago.  We can simultaneously run 2 HD streams (about 4 MD each) to 2 HDTV and 2 lower bit rate streams to 2 tablets simultaneously while using VOIP with no problem.

    HD streams with netflix are adaptive and peak at around 4 -5 Mb. Tablet streams are about 1.5 Mb each.  VOIP usage is minimal.

    If you are serious about "cutting the cord," try out a ROKU box to stream.  If you are in a OTA reception area, you'll probably be very surprised about the high quality of the OTA picture (better than cable or satellite HD in my experience).

    The Best way to get Correct Bandwidths is to use an SNMP Monitor.
    You could use something like Paessler

    Our ISP also has a cap per month (based on the billing date).  Any thing over the plan limit is billed at a rate of $0.05 per MB. 

    I have found with the 2 NIC setup that dividing the Astaro total MB by two was close enough.        

    I would like to see the Monthly Executive report have an adjustable first day of month value or being able to run a custom Executive report from begin date to end  date.
