Swap file usage

A few of my customers have constantly 30% of swap file usage while RAM usage is still at 50%. Is this normal or there is something wrong? Other customers have only little or zero swap usage. This happen to both hardware and software appliances. Any idea? They are using ASG8.202

    how much ram and which features are on and how many users?  asg 8.2x is extremely ram and cpu dependent now.  If you are using http proxy with program control and/or ips you really need a minimum of 4 gigs of ram...you can get away with 2.

    This is just how the Linux memory management model works, if the RAM is not active it will be moved to swap depending on the configuration of the subsystem.

    It could mean that at sometime in the past there was no free RAM and swap had to be used, for performance reasons it is not paged back into active memory unless requested.

    As Peter says (and has been discussed at length before here) "allocated" swap is not the same as "active swap". If you are not "out" of memory, then the swap you see allocated will grow over time as programs and applications reserve their piece of the swap partition, which is perfectly normal so they have something to call on when they need disk or if the unit is totally out of memory.

    This means you can have 5% memory usage and still see 40% swap, since the swap isnt active, just "allocated" for when things need it. They feel, why give it back? its not being used, and next time i dont have to go looking for disk space if i just keep this piece for me just in case. 

    Hope that makes sense, it certainly doesnt mean you need 4GB of memory, we have thousands of units in the field running 1GB without issue, and they have no complaints.
