Ok, so myself and a co-worker are having a heated discussion about routing between two offices in different geographic locations. The two offices are connected by a managed MPLS circuit, and each location has its own internet connection. We'll use ATL and NY as mock locations to get the config sorted out. Each location has an unmanaged firewall (well managed by us, not the internet provider) connected to an ADTRAN device. The ADTran has 2 connections, one connected directly to the Firewall (For internet access) and one connected to a Switch (for MPLS access). The MPLS gateway addresses are configured as follows: ATL: 10.10.1.250 and NY: 10.10.2.250. Each firewall has a static public IP address on the external port, and the Private IP of 10.10.1.1 and 10.10.2.1 respectively on the LAN.
Solution 1:
Default Gateway: 10.10.x.1
Static Route statement on each machine provided through DHCP for 10.10.2.x with a gateway of 10.10.x.250
Solution 2:
Default Gateway: 10.10.x.1
Static route on router for other subnet using the 10.10.x.250 gateway. No changes to desktops or servers route statements.
Solution 3:
Default gateway 10.10.x.250
MPLS circuit has route statement of 0.0.0.0 MASK 255.255.255.255 10.10.x.1.
Which one of these is the most efficient way to provide the correct routing. I am presenting it this way because the person that I am discussing this with has a lot more networking experience than me, so they may be completely correct in their solution. I dont want to influence the outcome, just want to know the correct way to configure this type of network.
