changing the IP of internal interface without reinstalling?

Currently my internal network uses address 192.168.1.1  which is very common on home networks,this was causing problems when connecting to my PPTP VPN from a network using IP's in the same format. 

I tried changing the IP of the internal interface using the webUI but it wouldn't let me as its currently in use. I was expecting it to let me change it but require a reboot for it to take effect or something similar but i would let me. 

whats the easiest way to change the internal IP?  

I have a spare network port on the box if that changes anything?  I was thinking maybe I could just configure the spare interface enough to let me log in to the webui with that then change the IP when the original internal interface is down? 

aside from 192.168.1.x and 10.0.0.x are there any other ip ranges I should avoid on the network?

    You're correct that you cannot change the IP of an interface that you are currently using to connect to WebAdmin with.  You're also correct that the best way to do this is to configure the spare interface, log into WebAdmin through that, then you'll be able to change the IP and network information for your regular internal interface.

    based on the wiki link 192.168.197.1 should be ok and I can remember that [:)] 

    I will change it some time on Monday when the internet connection is pretty much idle, to avoid having people nag me. 

    do the network definitions get updated? or will i have to change them too?
