DHCP client not working with Comcast Cable

I have an ASG box that was working fine for better than a year on AT&T DSL, but when I moved I had to switch to Comcast cable.  The same box immediately had trouble with its DHCP client on the WAN port.  It would obtain a lease at boot, but then if for any reason the link bounces (happens especially in the rain), ASG is unable to renew the lease without a reboot, and sometimes not even then.

I've tried it both with ARP cache enabled and disabled...sometimes it works one way and sometimes the other, but either way the WAN port seems stuck on the same IP it already had, and the "Renew" button does not refresh the DHCP.

In these situations, invariably if I plug my Windows PC directly into the cable modem it obtains a lease immediately and tests out with a fast, stable connection, so the problem is clearly in the ASG box and not in the modem or the account.  I've already tried swapping out the NIC and that has not changed the situation.  I also upgraded to 8.0 (now 8.03) and this has not changed the problem at all.

I can't find anything in the logs, but I may not know where to look.  I've also found no way to renew the lease manually from the command line; everything I google turns out to be a command that's not available in the ASG bash shell.  Any suggestions?

    Does an authorized reseller get a partner license?  There is support for that.

    Indeed they do, Bob.  I had seen the email on that way back when and never got around to upgrading my license.  Thanks for the hint.  I just upgraded my license and re-opened the case.  I'll post back to the forum anything I learn.

    I am a newbie with Asatro and am having the exact same problem.  The DHCP client on my eth1 does not get an address from my ISP (also Comcast).  All other machines in my house get addresses - even without power cycling the cable modem.  I am on version 8.003.  I know the hardware and cables are OK because I changed the interface to Ethernet and statically assigned the last IP that was given to me by my ISP and I was up and running.  Any news on this issue?  Thanks - Bob.

    I found this while researching the DHCP client issue on the WAN interface.  Would anyone care to comment on what this means?  It is for version 7.4, altough I am having the issues on 8.003

    dynamic (DHCP) IP-Addresses on Eth-VLAN Interfaces (will not be supported in V7.4)

    I have decided to use an old router to solve the DHCP problem on the Astaro WAN side.  I have an old Linksys router I will connect to the cable modem to act as a DHCP client.  The Astaro firewall eth1 port will connect to the old router and the eth0 will connect to my newer router (which I will just be using as a switch).  This way I can assign a static IP to the eth1 interface and be done with it.  The only thing I need to watch for is if my DNS servers change from my ISP.  I'd still be interested to know if Astaro acknowledges this as a "bug" or if they reccommend a different configuration.

    Hi, this wouldn't apply unless your EXT interface is a configured in Astaro as a VLAN.
    If you haven't setup VLANs, it won't be configured that way.

    Doh!   Sorry - dumb question but thanks for taking the time to answer it anyway.  I see the VLAN in the note now.

    The DNS servers probably won't change, but I'd recommend using OpenDNS or GoogleDNS instead of your ISP's DNS servers (for multiple reasons; they have some nice filtering for malware sites, etc.).

    *sigh* Just experienced the same issue myself tonight using 8.100. I saw that 50/10 service began to be offered in my area, so I called Comcast to place the order, went to Best Buy to pick up a new Motorola SB6120 DOCSIS 3.0 modem, called Comcast to register the MAC of the modem, and ....nothing. No matter what combination of cold starts and reboots of Astaro and the modem I tried, Astaro could not get a dhcp address on the WAN. Lots of "ignoring packet with xid 0xc6270000 as it's not ours (0x479e49ad)" type messages though.
     
    Maybe Comcast does something really weird with the way that it hands out DHCP addresses, but I'm going to have to agree that there is an Astaro issue at play here as well. 
     
    I also tried plugging into the modem directly, one at a time, 1 Win2008R2 server, 1 Win 7 x64 desktop, 1 Win 7 x86 desktop, 1 Win XP laptop, Linksys router, netgear router, Cisco PIX 506e. Each was able to receive an address, gateway, and DNS server information from Comcasts DHCP easily.
     
    Edit: Looks to me as though the heart of the issue is xid matching (or not in the case of Comcast). http://www.freesoft.org/CIE/RFC/2131/20.htm . Also found some information that this has been a recurring issue with certain versions of dhcpcd. Several possible causes.
     
    Now I do use an Astaro appliance at work, fully subscribed, with support. Unfortunately, this issue is at home with a home license. Still, if any dev wants to check into this in the next day or two (before I cancel the service, return the gear, and not cancel my DSL), I would have no problem with a dev remoting in and using my system for some debugging. It's an issue that does affect multiple Astaro users and would be very difficult for the devs to check into fully on their own, since the devs are in Germany where there is no Comcast.

    Hi, try opening a support case. They do sometimes process them for home licenses, especially if you have other licenses as well.

    Went the double nat route for now.  Put an old cheapo Linksys I had lying around between the Astaro and the cable modem.
