Problem with PPPoE in V8.002 drops connection: Vigor2910 doesn't

I'm evaluating Astaro at home for use in my business but I'm having a particular problem with ADSL that is a bit of a show stopper. I have it running on a refurb PC.

Previously I was using a Draytek Vigor 2910 connect to the the ISP supplied ADSL modem (TNN Aztech ADSL2+ Ethernet Bridge Router DSL-600E).

When setting it up I had a lot of problems getting it to connect but it turned out the ISP had problems in my area that day. Eventually it just worked.

The Astaro has just been working without fault for almost 6 days but suddenly it dropped the PPPoE connection to the ISP (Bezeqint in Israel) and then refused all connections internally to the admin interface. I power cycled it and when it came up it refused to connect. I tried all the switching on and off I could but have given up now. I made no config changes or did anything special this morning: it just disconnected.

As soon as I connected the Vigor 2910 back to the modem it connects fine and the Vigor is rock solid and works for months untouched.

Are there some issues with Astaro and PPPoE? Is there a way I can connect the Astaro through the Vigor though frankly I'm not sure I can be bothered?

I'd really like to get this working, I like the product and I like the configurability, but I don't have much more time to waste on this when swapping the Astaro for a  old bit of kit just works.

    This doesn't sound like anything in Astaro itself.  Have you run diagnostics on your old PC?

    Just in case something changed spontaneously in the configuration, if you configured the automtic backups, copy an unencrypted backup onto a USB memory stick, and then reboot the PC with the memory stick inserted - it will see the backup and restore from it.

    I've run every diagnostic known to man.

    I took the opportunity of having it off line today to stick another gig of ram in there pulling it up to 2 gig. It was sidelined today but I plugged it back in now and it's working just fine after the Vigor was working all day. I didn't change a thing from this morning as it was physically disconnected from all it's wires!

    I just can't figure it out.

    I have been using pppoe no problem. One thing to keep in mind is that astaro doesn't run great on old hardware. The old belief of linux needing modest hardware is not very relevant to newer versions specially UTMs that run multiple daemons.

    Snort reloads every time you tinker with a network and depending on your hardware your cpu load might be too high which makes astaro inaccessible. 

    Your ISP might be using something funky for pppoe. Look in the pppoe logs to see what is going on. You can double NAT if your router is doing the pppoe part to your liking. 

    Familiarizing yourself with different security products is time consuming specially when done on mediocre hardware. But well worth in the end if security is what you want. You can't compare a UTM with a generic aztech router and say I don't have the time to compare because there is no comparison.

    You're right of course Billybob, this is not a consumer piece of kit: I understand that now. I'm learning more about networking from this thing than I have in the last 5 years.

    Its not such a bad bit of kit I'm using, it's a HP DC700 Pentium 4 3Ghz. Not stunning but OK. I do see now that it's running with 2gig of RAM instead of 1gig that it's not using any swap whereas before it was.

    I'll see what happens tonight and for the next few days.
