VMWare ESX 4.0 with Cisco ASA Help

We have been an Astaro customer for three years.  Recently, our Astaro Security Gateway appliance (built by a third party vendor - Secure Crossings) failed and we needed to purchase another device to run the Astaro software.  We purchased a Dell Poweredge R610 server and placed VMWare ESXi 4.0 on the server.  Then we installed the Astaro Security Gateway Vmware appliance on the VMWare Esxi server.  This server sits behind a Cisco ASA 5510 server.  The plan was to have internet traffic go through the Cisco ASA 5510 via crossover cable and into the Dell Poweredge R610 server.  Then, using virtual network configuration within the ESXi software application, I would configure the internal and external port for the Astaro Appliance.

When I attempted to do this configuration, the cross over cable from the internal port on the ASA (eth1) and the external port on the Dell Poweredge server (eth1) showed an "ERROR" notification within the Astaro Security Gateway web interface.

I have attached a diagram of our configuration   Should this configuration work?  Should I update the VMWare tools on the ASG appliance?

  • I'm not familiar enough with all this, but I think you cannot associate the virtual Astaro's Internal and External interfaces to the same physical NIC.
