Slow internet speed issue

Hello,

I run a server with Astaro Security Gateway V 7.505 and i noticed that my internet speed is about 20 Mbps slower than it is supposed to be. My kind of internet contract is for 30 Mbps in download and as soon as the cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB5101E) is connected to the server than my internet speed over the lan is just 10 Mbps (9.8 to be exact checked with speedtest.net). My first feeling was that there was something wrong with the network card. These are steps i followed:

Changed between 3 different NIC - All 3 supporting 10/100 Mbps, nothing changed

Checked the cable between the modem and the NIC on the server - OK, Cat 5e, the right one


Checked as far as i could via the GUI for possible bandwidth filters or limitations - didn't find any that i am aware of

Keeping in mind also that:

Connecting the laptop directly to the modem, resulted in the correct speed - so not an ISP related issue

The NIC that communicates with the modem is in auto-neogotiation by default and forcing it to 100 Mbps full-duplex didn't help

Internal LAN traffic over the other NIC runs fine at 100 Mbps.

I am out of ideas...so any suggestions or other checks that i could perform are more than wellcome.

    Have you run the test with your own files?  My experience is that the throughput for larger downloads is unaffected and that you can't tell the difference between a hundreth of a second and a 30th of a second for individual transactions.  Pages load at the same speed, etc.  Still, you may have Astaro hardware that can't handle more than 10MB throughput, so that's why I was suggesting real-world tests instead of the free speedtest services.

    As a matter of fact i just downloaded the iso from Security Gateway as i am planning to install it again on a server i just built for this occasion. Download speed was around 1,5 Mbps. The reason why i used speedtest or even the speed check site of my isp was because i found the results reliable especially while testing the speed when directly connected to the modem. Anyway i changed again the wan NIC with another couple of cards and it didnt work anymore at all. I will restore my backed up setting on the new server and will let know if it works. If it does than it was definitely a hardware problem.
