DHCP shell commands

Since I'm not a Linux guy...

Moving to using Astaro at home as my perimeter device.

I'm using DSL from a telco that uses DHCP with very long lease times. An IP Address will not be handed out to a new device (MAC address), unless... 1) The lease time has expired on the DHCP server, 2) After a lot of hold time and shuffling around, an appropriate Tech person at the telco deletes the old entry from the lease table, 3) A DHCP release is issued from the client.

Here's my question: Since WebAdmin only offers a renew command on the interface (which is ignored by the ISP DHCP server unless the DHCP server table entry has the same MAC Address), from the Astaro shell, what would be the equivalent commands to windows ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew?

Knowing this would save me hours of waiting to get internet connectivity.

For anyone who cares, the ISP is Verizon North. Verizon West uses the same system for limiting the ability of people to connect and obtain IP Addresses. Verizon East uses PPoE.

Scott, they use dhcpcd instead of dhclient on Astaro... the DHCP script you may be looking for is /var/sec/chroot-dhcpc/bin, DHCPC.sh ... it looks like it only starts and stops dhcpcd for various interfaces, though... to force a release, you will need to issue the native command dhcpcd -k eth1 (where eth1 is whatever interface you are working with) ... of course, your mileage may vary, and this may require a reboot to "get over" after you issue this command.

Why yes it did.

Who knows what'll happen when Frontier takes over a big chunk of Verizons' internet provider holdings later this year though. May just wind up being PPoE anyway in a few months.

I'm not crazy about PPPoE... it adds overhead... not sure why all ISPs don't just allocated access based on the port used at the DSLAM...

Glad that worked; I haven't had anyone have that specific problem before, but now that I've done a bit of research and found an answer, it's sure to come up again.
