HTTP cache, any use?

on my server i've upgraded my internal nic from 100mbit to gigabit and i was curious what's my maximum speed on that nic with transparent proxy and enabled cache. to my surprise the wan and internal maximum inbound and outbound speeds are identical 8mbit and 1mbit, it seems enabling the cache doesn't really has any positive effect. is it really so?

    I'am also wondering about the caching behaviour. when I check our logfiles, we almost have no served requests, that were handled out of the proxy's cache. everything is cached="0" and so directly downloaded - consuming bandwidth. for example, the startscreen of a web search provider. although the providers logo (gif or jpg) is static, it never gets cached or served from cache when reloading or reopening the page. is there any configurable parameter for a better cache use?
