Messages spooling - will not deliver

I've had this happen a number of times, and then for some reason something just "starts" working, and I can't figure out why or how to make it work myself!

I have 404 notification messages in my spool.  They will not deliver.  I don't know why [:)]

I've restarted the ASG a few times, so just restarting exim won't do it I guess.  I've turned on the smarthost (although that shouldn't matter), but even when I do that it doesn't seem to help.  I'm deleting things because I just noticed that /var/storage is filling up (but of course I'm not getting any messages to that effect!).

Why is this failing?

    So - it doesn't seem like the Astaro is actually USING the smart host.  I get this now:

    2008:08:30-12:00:55 (none) exim[5428]: 2008-08-30 12:00:55 0yjgbW-0005C8-1h lowest numbered MX record points to local host: caledonia.net
    2008:08:30-12:00:55 (none) exim[5428]: 2008-08-30 12:00:55 0yjgbW-0005C8-1h == danita@caledonia.net R=dnslookup defer (-1): lowest numbered MX record points to local host

    And this is absolutely true, but has been so forever.  And it used to work.  That said, IF I am using a smarthost, exim shouldn't even be looking this up, but should be passing the delivery off to another mail server.

    and ps again - now it's working again all of a sudden, but I still have to figure out what to delete in /var/storage to clean it up!  So far none of the directories I've found to clean seem to have that much in them!
