What is the Deal with FTP and P2P

I literally spent all day trying to get a couple very small files uploaded to my FTP server. Pulling my hair out changing the configuration of my ASG... tweaking of my FTP proxy, disabling my FTP proxy, watching my "live logs", tweaking and disabling my packet filter, watching my "live logs", adding rules, double checking rules.... and the list goes on and on. Oh yeah and I can't forget all the googling and searching of this forum looking for anything that might help me with my FTP struggles.

Finally, I found a forum post that said "sending a file to the server it will stop 40% transferring"... then the next post said.... Disabling (IM/P2P >> P2P) Winny and FTP works fine again.

I had most everything blocked in the P2P area anyway... so I disabled it completely and now ...FTPing and the FTP proxy work great.

I was finally able to upload my files!!!

So what is the Deal with FTP and P2P (winny)?
Why is it one or the other?
What are the main issues of having the P2P area completely disabled?

Thanks!
