New to Astaro - trying to figure out SIP setup

Hi Guys and Gals

I'm new to the world of Astaro, we're considering it for the company, so I thought I'd try to set it up here at home.

So far with limited success, a lot of small quirks needs figuring out, most of all getting a grasp of the structure of everything.

I'm a bit stumped here with the SIP helper.

I've got a SIP phone here, a Linksys 901.
It was set up to the sip provider (sip.viptel.dk) directly on the WAN, but I would very much like to move it inside the Astaro.
So in Astaro -> VoIP Security -> SIP -> SIP Server Networks, I've entered sip.viptel.dk
Under SIP Client Networks, I've entered the new IP given on the inside of the Astaro.

In the phone, the IP is of course changed to a LAN IP, the gateway has been set to the Astaro. But how about the SIP Proxy, should that still be set to sip.viptel.dk or should it be the astaro box? I've tried NAT enabling the phone, but it doesn't make a difference???

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong...

    Hi,

    You still need to configure your Linksys phone with youy SIP provider.

    Astaro is not a SIP proxy, the SIP configuration on Astaro only allow SIP traffic.
    So it seems your Astaro config is good (server: SIP provider, client : your IP phone).
    Your IP phone config doesn't have to change, exept for the IP address as you did.

    Notice that i also have a problem with our SIP config (we have a Asterisk server inside) as the IP of our SIP provider seems to be load balanced and in this case, i don't know what to set as Server. I set "Any", but it isn't very secure... 
    Provider : VoipBuster. 
    IP used :194.221.62.185, 194.221.62.179, 194.120.0.180, 62.41.83.173, 80.239.235.5...

    Darned, some of the idea disappears if I can't make it work...

    Can you tell exactly what the problem is?

    Can you check in "packet filter" logs if anything is drop from your Linksys phone? It can help. You maybe have the same problem has i do. Try a call an wait about 1 minut to check if something comes up.

    I just did a test.
    dialing at 11:26:00
    remote phone ringing at 11:26:05
    hang on remote phone at 11:26:10
    Communication established at 11:27:25 (get a line in packet filter log "sip or h323 call).

    So it seems Astaro take more than 1 minut to manage the dynamic port assignement... quite slow...

    I don't know if this helps, but it is quite possible to use a SIP phone with just DNAT and PacketFilter settings (and QOS if you want).

    I'm using a Centillium device on AT&T.

    Hi Barry,

    It can be a good solution, but how do you manage the dynamic IP range for tha SIP communication? If you only set a DNAT and PF for port 5060, it won't work... or do you allow all outbound traffic for your sip phone??? (security issue...)

    I allow all outbound traffic FROM SIP device TO AT&T network.
    I know that the AT&T network includes LOTS of end users, etc., but it seems safe enough to me.
    I could narrow it down further if I wanted, by watching the connections more closely.

    If I ever get around to getting a VLAN switch, the SIP will go into the UnTrusted VLAN along with the WiFi, etc.
